Calum Wood biography

Calum Wood is a Scottish folk singer-songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and mastering engineer from Aberdeen in northeast Scotland. His music brings together acoustic storytelling, Scottish folk roots and the intimate guitar-and-voice sound of the British folk revival. Across original songs, interpretations of other writers’ work and commissioned instrumental music, his central interests are people, place and the stories that connect them.

His forthcoming album, Songs from the Soapbox, is released on 16 October 2026 through Magic Park Records. Recorded with guitar and voice only, it draws on the sound and spirit of the 1960s folk revival, with Bert Jansch and Jackson C. Frank among its touchstones. Storytelling, satire and social commentary connect it to the broader songwriting tradition of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. The music gives those stories room to speak: acoustic guitar, a recognisably Scottish voice and songs carried by phrasing, melody and the detail of their lyrics.

Wood’s career encompasses the UK festival circuit with The Banana Sessions, Edinburgh’s folk community, the Royal Oak: Best of Folk compilation, the commissioned She Wynds On: The Snow Roads EP and an expanding catalogue of solo recordings. Alongside his own releases, he works in recording, production, mastering and composition for film.

Scottish roots and Edinburgh’s folk community

Originally from Aberdeen, Wood developed his career within Scotland’s live music and recording communities. He studied Popular Music at Napier University in Edinburgh, graduating with a first-class BA (Hons) in 2008. His work has since moved between songwriting, ensemble performance, recording and commissioned composition.

Edinburgh’s Royal Oak, the folk pub on Infirmary Street, became the focus of an early recording project. In 2008, Wood conceived, curated, recorded and released Royal Oak: Best of Folk through Magic Park Records. Bringing together studio recordings and the atmosphere of live sessions, the compilation documented the musical life associated with the pub.

Its contributors included Kris Drever and Sarah McFadyen, John Langan, Aberfeldy, Ross Galloway, Fribo, The Banana Sessions and The Bothy Collective, including Frank Burkitt. Author Ian Rankin contributed the foreword, describing a collection in which “There’s poignancy here, and humour, and rollicking good tunes.”

The project established an enduring connection between Wood’s own music and the wider community around it. As a songwriter, performer and recording musician, he has continued to work across that shared ground, where traditional material, original songs and musical friendships meet.

The Banana Sessions

Wood was a core member of The Banana Sessions, contributing guitar, vocals and songwriting alongside singer and co-writer Roberta Pia, also known as Roberta Banana. The Edinburgh band combined folk, pop, jazz and Balkan influences with humour and an energetic live approach.

With The Banana Sessions, Wood performed at festivals including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Knockengorroch and Beat-Herder. Their music also reached audiences through an acoustic medley of songs by The Prodigy. In a 2015 event preview, Time Out described the group as “Familiar faces on the UK-wide summer festival scene” and noted the online success of that medley.

The band’s recorded work includes the Yellow EP, Mixtape and Be Bold and Brilliant. Mixtape brought together guests including Martin Green and Aidan O’Rourke of Lau, Ross Ainslie, Lindsey Black and Heather McLeod. It was recorded at Castlesound Studios and The Depot, with production and engineering by Garry Boyle, mastering by Stuart Hamilton and concept production by Dave Hook.

Be Bold and Brilliant continued the band’s collaborative songwriting, including “You Are My Home”, a song Wood wrote to sing with Pia. These recordings document the ensemble side of his musical life, with shared vocals, rhythmic arrangements and room for the individual character of guest musicians.

Wood also performed as a singer and guitarist in Edinburgh’s Taste of Scotland show. His wider performance work has included The Frank Burkitt Band, City City Beat, The Chans with Ross Galloway and guitar work with Kimi Jolly.

She Wynds On and the Snow Roads commission

In March 2018, Wood was commissioned to compose music for the Snow Roads, the scenic route through the Cairngorms National Park. The resulting five-track EP, She Wynds On: The Snow Roads, combines a title song with four instrumental pieces, following the journey from Blairgowrie through Braemar, Ballater and Tomintoul to Grantown-on-Spey.

The project was developed for the Snow Roads tourism initiative associated with Visit Cairngorms and the Cairngorms Business Partnership. Wood’s music formed part of the route’s digital visitor experience, providing an audio accompaniment to its landscape, communities and stories.

Wood composed and produced the EP, with contributions from Charlie McKerron, Ross Ainslie, Robert Black, Tom Oakes, Brigid Mhairi, Julia Dignan and Stuart Spence. Garry Boyle recorded, mixed and mastered it. The arrangements bring acoustic instruments into contact with keyboards, percussion and electric guitar, allowing the music to move between intimate folk melody and a broader cinematic sound.

Reviewing the EP for Folk Radio UK, now KLOF Mag, Neil McFadyen wrote that Wood’s “cinematic music is beautifully evocative of the experience.” FATEA reviewer Ben Morgan-Brown described it as “an evocative and atmospheric EP”. Liverpool Sound and Vision awarded it 9/10.

Patterns

Released on 28 March 2025, Patterns is Wood’s debut solo album. Its eight original songs explore recurring themes in personal life and the wider culture, moving through family history, memory, place and human experience.

The album includes “Proud Knoydart”, “Patterns”, “Guiding Drum”, “4000 Holes in Blackburn Lancashire”, “The Square of Fabric”, “The Banjo Song (Kathleen Mulligan)”, “Shoulda Coulda Woulda” and “The River”. Guitar, banjo and voice form the centre of a record that also makes space for bass and electronic textures.

In his Folking.com review, Seuras Og highlighted the album’s variety and singled out “The Square of Fabric”, a song about a young soldier facing execution, as “maybe the best song yet to cover this well-travelled subject.” The review also recognised Wood’s ability to draw listeners into the songs through his voice and storytelling.

Patterns gathers the strands of his earlier work into a personal solo statement, combining the directness of acoustic performance with the possibilities of arrangement and production.

Original songs, interpretations and collaboration

Alongside his albums, Wood has released a series of standalone songs that show the range of his musical interests. His original “Willow Tree” features vocalist Brigid Mhairi, renewing a collaboration heard on She Wynds On. Another original, “Taking Water”, followed in May 2026.

His recorded interpretations include John Frusciante’s “Anne”; Eddie Vedder’s “Sleeping by Myself”, released jointly with The Frank Burkitt Band; “Buscuits”, a song by Fink’s Finian Greenall, Guy Whittaker and Tim Thornton; and “Ae Fond Kiss”, setting Robert Burns’s words within the Scottish song tradition.

In spring 2026, Wood released versions of The Beta Band’s “Dry the Rain”, Midlake’s “Roscoe” and Brian McNeill’s “The Yew Tree”. Together, these recordings reflect an approach to folk music that makes room for traditional repertoire and contemporary songwriting, with each song finding its place in his own musical voice.

Christmas Songs from the Kitchen Table

On 28 November 2025, Wood released Christmas Songs from the Kitchen Table, Vol. 1, a collection of seven familiar seasonal songs presented in an intimate acoustic setting.

The album includes “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, “O Christmas Tree”, “Good King Wenceslas”, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Auld Lang Syne”. Voice and acoustic guitar carry the collection, with small arrangement details bringing individual character to the songs.

Wood recorded and mastered the album himself. Its close, natural presentation keeps attention on the performances and the melodies. In his Jesusfreakhideout review, Michael Weaver described it as “warm, inviting, and perfect for the season.”

Recording, production, mastering and film composition

Wood’s work behind the microphone is complemented by a career behind the mixing desk. His recording and production experience includes the Royal Oak compilation, his own releases and many other recording credits.

His mastering work has included projects for Jon Mackenzie and Oli Harris. He also provided mixing guidance to Frank Burkitt during the making of The Frank Burkitt Band’s Silvereye, released in 2021.

In 2025, Wood completed Berklee Online’s graduate-level individual course Advanced Audio/Music Mastering: Theory and Practice, studying with mastering engineer Jonathan Wyner. This complements a working practice built around performance, critical listening and the relationship between an arrangement and its recorded sound.

His commissioned composition work includes the Snow Roads project and music for television advertising. As of October 2026, he is composing for From A Seed, a documentary about Scottish forestry, working with Aberdeen’s FortyTwo Studio.

Songs from the Soapbox

Songs from the Soapbox, due on 16 October 2026, places acoustic guitar and voice at the centre of Wood’s next release. The album draws heavily on the 1960s British folk revival, combining original songwriting with the clarity and intimacy of a solo performance.

Its stories make room for satire and political and social commentary within the broader folk songwriting tradition. The emphasis remains on the songs themselves: their characters, language, melodies and delivery.

From Edinburgh sessions and festival stages to landscape-inspired composition and solo recordings, Wood’s work follows a continuing interest in what a song can hold. Family stories, remembered places, humour and observation all find a place in a musical life rooted in Scottish folk and open to the possibilities of the recording studio.
